Conscious Casualty

This dummy was developed with the co-operation of Surf Life Saving Australia as a water rescue dummy for IRB Racing, IRB driver training & Tube Rescue practice. After two years of development, several prototypes and extensive testing we are delighted with the result.

During the testing the dummy was also found to be suitable for Jet Ski rescue training and other general rescues scenarios.

Compared to the standard water rescue dummy this new style dummy has been modified as follows:

* Shortened to 1.5m
* Dry weight reduced to 20kg, which increases to about 40+kg when pulled from the water
* Weighting lowered from the torso to the hips to improve stability in a moving sea
* Boots removed and replaced with durable PVC sleeves on lower leg.
* Arms aloft to simulate a volunteer ‘patient’.

The problem for many SLS clubs is to find enough willing volunteers to act as a patient for the IRB rescue teams for practice, especially during the colder months – consequently, skill development suffers.

Now you can train year round and practice those fast pick ups as many times as you like.

This dummy never complains about the cold water, the aching arms and the sore shoulder or jaw from when the rescuer slightly misjudged the pick up.

For IRB driver training you can now train in the roughest surf, close to the reef and in the coldest weather.

The dummy weighs 20kgs when dry. After a few minutes in the water the dummy takes on the water and assumes an upright posture with arms aloft.

For IRB Racing, the dummy attaches to the ‘can’ using a spring clip which grips the webbing strap secured to the neck of the dummy. As you grab the dummy with your arm through the dummies arms the clip releases and you drag it into the IRB. The weight you are hauling is the dry weight of the dummy plus the water that has ingressed into the dummy, ~ 40+ kg

Once in the IRB, the water runs out of the dummy and quickly returns to about 20kg which makes for reasonably easy weight management.

The coloured band band at the top of the arms can be supplied in a number of different team ‘racing’ colours to enable easier recognition when multiple dummies are deployed. They simply velcro to the overall.

The orange overall is made of polyurethane coated polyester which is resistant to salt water. Polypropylene webbing is stitched to the overall in all high stress points.

Beneath the overall the carcass is a tough nylon mesh, as used in our standard water rescue dummy which has been used by NATO military rescue dummies for years. (see standard water rescue dummy for more info)

A strong webbing loop behind the head helps position and retrieve the dummy, and hang up the dummy to dry after use.

This is a tough and durable dummy which, with reasonable care, will last and give years of productive training service.
It opens up a wealth of new training scenarios previously impossible with volunteer patients.

Bariatric (Obese) Rescue Training Dummies

vWe now have available our first bariatric dummy weighing in at 180Kg! It is designed for a team of at least 4-6 people to rescue. It is supplied complete with a carrying sheet (pictured) to assist in carrying and positioning the dummy flat out.

Obesity is a very real problem in the UK and across the world and judging by government figures the problem is getting worse. Rescue teams will need to consider how they will deal with casualties of this size and this dummy will enable realistic training to take place.

We have worked very hard to achieve a ‘fluidity of movement’ with the weight rather than just producing a heavy ‘lump’, so we think it will be very realistic to work with. The fluidity of movement is created by distributing the weight in 1/2 Kg weight in pockets across the surface of the dummy.

The Bariatric dummy is based around a 100Kg general purpose dummy with a further 5 layers over the top, these being a mixture of the weighted layers and foam cushioning that enables the weight to slide from side to side; the effect is actually very realistic.

This is a real ‘team effort’ dummy !

Hazmat Rescue Training Dummies

The standard General Purpose Dummy is ideal for all the general rescue scenarios, but when you need to practice a rescue scenario where the dummy needs to be doused in water such as a chemical spillage, or lay for long periods in a constantly wet storm-water drain, foul water or wet cave rescue then the HazMat dummy is the one you need.

Instead of the heavy duty canvas of the standard General Purpose Dummy the HazMat dummy has a carcass of nylon reinforced PVC which is will withstand continuous wet conditions.

The dummy is supplied with an overall similar to the Water Rescue dummies made of polyurethane coated polyester.

At the end of the rescue exercise hose the dummy down with fresh water and hang up to dry – it will dry quickly.

Note that this dummy has normal weighting so do not put it into deep water – it will sink ! For deep water rescue scenarios use the Water Rescue dummy which is designed to float appropriately.

The internal construction is the same as the General Purpose dummy, described below.

Crucially, these dummies totally eliminate the risk of pinch welts and bruising being inflicted on trainees, a common injury when using plastic bodied dummies which usually have hard limb joints – for example when a hard knee joint folds over the forearm of a trainee. Our dummies have soft outer layers and have no hard joints – in fact you can forcibly wrap a knee joint around a trainees forearm with no risk of injury.

Available in 3 weights from the light adult 30kg to the heavy 70kg adult.

These dummies are tough enough to be buried under concrete, have steel lintels, concrete slabs, trees or motor vehicles laid upon them to present a realistic scenarios for rescuers.

The protective overalls keep the dummy clean, and greatly increases the lifespan; they are produced using polyurethane coated polyester and are reinforced with high density polypropylene webbing in identified high stress areas. The ends of the arms are left open to allow rapid drainage of water when retrieving or washing after the exercise. The machine washable overalls are fitted to all sizes of dummy.

The HazMat dummies can be used in temperatures up to 100ºC. Above this temperature or where ‘flash-over’ may occur we recommend using our Flame Retardant Rescue Dummy.

All HazMat dummies are supplied complete with Wellington boots. The boots protect the legs if the dummy is dragged along the ground.

All dummies are screen printed on he head with a warning triangle, a handling risk note and space for you to record the asset number the date of purchase on the head.n now remove the red head cover and wash it.

As can be seen from the image above with the overalls removed, the HazMat dummy has an outer carcass of tough nylon reinforced PVC with all seams double stitched. High density polypropylene webbing provides extra strength and durability, especially at the high stress points.

The flexible inner core is weighted to human proportions using 2Kg packets of 5-10 mm crushed, washed stone aggregate. The weight packets are then sewn into a nylon inner, with all these body parts (arms, legs, chest etc) tied to the outer carcass using Polypropylene webbing. This method of construction prevents ‘slumping’ of the weight pouches and allows the dummy to maintain it’s shape when in use.

These inner components are separated and padded using 25mm polyurethane foam which results in a dummy with the life-like feel of a real casualty.

The new shaped head, also recently introduced, allows the fitting of most types of immobilisation collars, allowing this additional technique to be included in the training scenario.

If the head gets badly soiled you can now remove the red head cover and wash it
